Western Maryland Rail Trail Bike Ride July 17

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service will host a guided bike ride on the Western Maryland Rail Trail, July 17, 2010. Participants will meet at 9:00 am at the C & O Bicycle Shop in Hancock, Maryland.

The public is cordially invited to join Fort Frederick State Park naturalist Charles Sullivan for a guided bike ride on the historic Western Maryland Rail Trail. We will take a leisurely ride on the paved trail, pausing to explore the natural wonders along the way, enjoying birdsongs and frequent views of the Potomac River. We will examine some of the flowering plants and birds and discuss the geology and ecology of the area.

The event is free to the public. Disabled access is available; however, the ride may cover as much as 25 miles round trip. Accommodations for individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Seven days advance notice is requested.  Please dress for inclement weather or hot sunny days and carry plenty of water.

Bicycle rentals are available at the bicycle shop, which is located along the Rail Trail and the C & O Canal National Historic Park in Hancock, Maryland. Refreshments and snacks are also available at the bicycle shop and elsewhere in Hancock.

The ride will last about 4 hours. There is no better way to relax, meet new friends, and experience Maryland’s natural beauty than a ride on the Western Maryland Rail Trail.

C & O Bicycle is located off of I-70 at exit 3 and exit 1 from 522. The shop is located at 9 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Hancock, Maryland 21750.
