At its Thursday, April 27, meeting, the Sharpsburg Historical Society will commemorate the entry of the United States into the conflict now called World War I. The meeting starts at 7:00 in Town Hall, 106 East Main St., Sharpsburg.
The program will include a living history presentation of military uniforms and recognition of the 66 Sharpsburg area men who served from April 1917 until the end of the war.
The memorial monument in front of Town Hall was "Erected by citizens of Sharpsburg Dist. in recognition of the patriotism shown by all who answered our country's call in The World War." In addition to honoring those citizens, the program will explore life on the homefront and some of the enduring results of that time.
Attendees are invited to bring photographs, documents, newspapers, letters, and other items to share.
The meeting is free and open to all. Info: 301 992 9767

FLAGS FOR HEROES
MAY 22 -30, 2017
The Rotary Club of Long Meadows is honoring ‘heroes’ at the second annual Flags for Heroes display during the Memorial Day Holiday. Heroes can be members of the military, police, fire, or other first responder; a special teacher, mentor, coach or community leader; or family member or friend. This week long display of American flags at Rotary Park on Northern Ave. culminates in a ceremony to celebrate the contributions of these significant people in our lives.
Sponsorship of an individual flag with a tag displaying the names of the donor and hero costs $50.00. Corporate sponsorships are also available. Funds raised will go directly back into the local community to make a difference in our hometown through the work of the Rotary.
